The Gospel

Here at Christ Memorial, we value the gospel of Jesus Christ supremely. It’s not because we’re narrow-minded or archaic. It’s because we cherish life. As Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68). We’ve discovered that only Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, has the remedy for death, which is life.

Now, many are turned off by any discussion of death. It seems morbid and negative. But at CMC, we would rather face the ugly reality of death than deny it. Death is real and its cause, sin, has been destroying lives, marriages, families, communities, even empires, since Adam first bit into that forbidden fruit. When Adam sinned, he was representing all of humanity. His sin has been credited to all humanity and has resulted in death for all humanity.

And death is not just a physical death. Even worse, it's a spiritual death – exile from the presence of a beautiful and loving and glorious God forever. This is the just penalty God threatened Adam with in Genesis (Gen. 2:16-17). It’s the penalty God exacted from Adam and all humanity because of their sin (Gen. 3:22-24, Rom. 5:12). Hell, a place of eternal suffering, is so miserable because God and all that is good are wholly absent. Sin reigns unchallenged and undiluted in hell.

But this is why we love the gospel at CMC. It’s the only message, the only reality that allows us to face the ugliness of sin and death and hell. The gospel teaches that while we were yet sinners, rebels and enemies of God, He loved us by sending His only Son to take on our sin and pay its just consequences, death and hell. Jesus was our righteous representative. His cry from the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”, reveals that God punished Him, rejecting Him instead of us. His final cry, “It is finished!”, confirms, along with His resurrection three days later, the victory of life over death, and the sufficiency of that punishment for the sins of all who would believe.

All who would believe. That’s the way we receive His payment on our behalf – by believing. We can’t earn it. We don’t receive it by going to church or being born into a Christian family. God’s justice for our sin, His free and eternal forgiveness, is received only by faith in His Son. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life” (Jn. 3:16).

The only remedy for death is life. And Jesus has a monopoly on life. Here at CMC, we love life, real gospel life, which comes only through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And we invite you to come to Jesus and find real gospel life.
